Literacy Curriculum Development for K-12
The K-12 Literacy curriculum will be strengthened by meeting and training with Literacy consultants from LitLife, Inc. on the ES, MS and HS levels. This program will ensure that the language arts curriculum is aligned across all grade levels and is delivered using “best practices.” This is a continuation of a program for the Elementary School that has been funded in the past and is being expanded into the Middle and High Schools.
Close itK-12 Global Education Initiative for K-12
This district wide initiative works to ensure that all Bronxville graduates are prepared to live and contribute to the global community. This Foundation grant will support: Curriculum and Professional Development through a developing relationship with The Asia Society and International Studies. A Summer Service Learning Project will facilitate a transfer of the learned experiences of students volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania to Bronxville classrooms. Lessons involving science, community values, arts, and social impact will be part of these authentic and globally relevant issues. Exploration of reinstituting a Foreign Exchange Program for students. Expanding Global Seminar instruction to include presentations given by One-to-World and video conferencing by Global Nomads. Focus areas will strive to enhance student’s understanding of cultural, environmental and economic issues.
Close itBook Making Workshop for Elementary School
Celebrating and displaying student work will be enhanced by a Book Making workshop that will provide direct instruction to our first and second grade faculty. Professional consultants/craftspeople will run a training session that will creatively teach book making and share best practices for using materials and tools to sustain book making projects for years to come. Additionally, the program will run inside the classroom providing the students with all the materials necessary to bring their first book to life.

Additional frames and a glass enclosed bulletin board will allow student artwork to be displayed in the hallways of the high school. Display of our student artwork will increase the student body and community’s awareness of artistic talent with in the school and inspire younger aspiring artists who view the artwork..
Close itComputer Controlled Router Cutting Machine
The Middle School Exploratory Class of Tech, a/k/a “shop” in the 70’s, will enjoy a technology upgrade with the purchase of a Computer guided router (CNC). The CNC is an automated tool that uses student generated computer designs to cut wood or plastic to its exact specifications. This technology will greatly enhance the speed with which projects are completed allowing more students to participate in the fabrication process of shop. The CNC machine has a wide range of useful applications including model making, woodworking, plastic design, and signage.

There will be 10 new Wolfe Digital Microscopes available to high school students in the Biology Labs. This exciting level of technology will allow students to record moving images, photography, measurements, display image enhancement, annotations, etc. Their recorded findings can be easily shared with the larger class through our Mimeo/SMART Board technology.
Close itClimbing Wall for Project Adventure
The loss of our original climbing wall during the flood four years ago, has been felt deeply by both the physical education team as well as the students. A 40’ Climbing Wall will be rebuilt in the Blue Gym for student use from the 5th to 12th grades. The wall will be used in conjunction with the Project Adventure program. In addition, a MS afterschool climbing club will be created.
Close itSenteo Interactive Test Scoring System for 4th & 5th Grades
The Senteo interactive response system is an assessment tool designed to enhance learning. It can be used to create a visual question set that is posted on a SMART Board. A student can point his or her individual Senteo control at the pertinent questions on the board and answer as they see fit. All answers are tabulated and the teacher can use the information to assess both class and individual needs. Senteo equipment has been added to the fourth grade level with this grant.
Close itEdinburgh International Theatre Fringe Festival
The Bronxville Drama Department was chosen by the American High School Theater Festival as one of 50 finalists nation-wide to perform in the highly acclaimed 2010 Edinburgh International Theater Festival. Even with the dedicated fundraising efforts brought forth by the students participating, additional funds were sought to augment the great expense of this educational experience and allowed for the funding of two chaperones.

The Bronxville High School Echo, an online student run newspaper, provides news and commentary to students, parents, faculty and alumni. The website enjoys about 1,000 hits monthly and continues to grow. Funding was provided to support the web-hosting/domain costs of operating this popular publication.
Close itLarge-Scale Geologic Visual Map Display
In order to enhance the area outside Dr. DiTulio’s classroom and lab, over-sized geologic maps will be wallpapered to the walls as is done in many university geology departments. Students in Earth Science, Environmental Science and other classes will be able to visualize this aspect of science on a much larger scale.

The Foundation has provided funding for the installation of an indoor batting cage that will be used as an instructional station for physical education classes and as a practice site for all school baseball and softball teams. The cage will be located in the Main Gym.
Close itGreen Roof Project for Elementary School
Following the overwhelming success of the High School Environmental Club’s Green Roof Project, the Elementary Science Department will enjoy the installation of a second Green Roof project outside of elementary science classrooms. In this way, environmental awareness will be promoted at the elementary school level and a partnership will be formed with members of the high school environmental club.
Close itSMART Boards for: Special Education, Grades 3-5, MS & HS Resource Room
Implementing SMART Board technology in Special Education Classes 3-5 and MS/HS Resource Rooms will help students with learning disabilities reach their academic potential. Grades 3-5 will benefit from this technology as it will provide an interactive tool to help children acquire, develop and master basic skills in reading, writing and math. MS/HS Resource Room students will enjoy more concise presentation of materials, organization exercises, note taking and reinforcement of content area lessons. SMART Boards will also allow Resource Room teachers to better collaborate with the content area teachers.

The addition of SMART Boards to the Elementary Art Program will dramatically enhance art instruction for all K-5 students. SMART Boards provide an innovative format for teacher demonstrations, display of enlarged art reproductions, and instant student access to multi-media information through the internet.

Given the immense success of SMART Boards in the 3rd to 5th grade classrooms, the second grade team is excited to implement this powerful technology in its classrooms. In addition our Elementary School Science classrooms will be outfitted with SMART Boards.
Close itSound Board and Related Equipment for ES, MS & HS Productions
No longer will Bronxville school need to rent costly sound equipment for each of its drama productions. With its own soundboard, the school will also be able to train students in the art of sound balancing for various shows. In addition, the upgraded equipment will improve assemblies and other events in the auditorium.
Close itService Learning Project in Tanzania
As part of its global initiative, the Bronxville School has established a unique partnership with the Joseph and Mary School, an affiliate of the Janada L. Batchelor Foundation for Children Orphanage (“JBFC”) in Kitongo, Tanzania. The Student-Faculty Legislature’s fundraising efforts provided tuition for several Tanzanian students to attend the school. In addition the Foundation grant was able to send two additional Bronxville students, for a total of four, to work at JBFC this summer. All participants were able to explore the impact of primary education on economic and community issues in the developing world, and have brought their experiences back to the Bronxville School community thru several assemblies.

With the purchase of new and more updated equipment, the Art Department’s Ceramics Class will be dramatically improved and a larger percentage of the student body will be able to participate in this class. In addition with the new equipment our art teachers are able to expand the curriculum and teach more complicated skills and projects to their class.

Installation of a new wall mounted SMART Board projector in the C Wing Computer Lab will enhance students’ learning experiences by allowing better viewing of the SMART Board from all computer desks in the room.
Close itAthletic Council Leadership Development Program
All high school students struggle with the concept of leading their peers and, unless they are part of the peer leaders group developed through the guidance office, they are left to be leaders with no training. Our student athletes tend to be high profile students in our community with a great deal of potential that requires training and support. This project established a pilot position for a faculty/coach advisor for the Athletic Council. This advisor will work directly with the student athletes in developing better leadership skills and empowering the student branch of Athletic Council to work as advocates for their peers. The position is similar to the SFL advisor and class advisors.

SmartResponse is a SMART technology that allows teachers to quickly assess students’ understanding of lessons via interactive clickers that administer questions and answers on a variety of subject matters. By eliciting answers in this manner, teachers can quickly detect problem areas and provide students with immediate feedback and support. This technology is particularly helpful for students who are otherwise reticent or who learn differently.

Updated supplemental diagnostic materials will be provided to the ES Special Education team to assist in pinpointing specific learning needs in both reading and math. The grant aligns with the Foundation mission by strengthening curriculum and enhancing faculty resources.

In collaboration with the Bronxville PTA, school faculty and staff were provided with reusable water bottles upon the opening of school. The gift represents a gesture of good will, continued eco-awareness, and appreciation for our Faculty by both the Foundation and PTA.
